Some of you guys are nuts. We're talking the Greatest of All Time, not the greatest of your lifetime. 1. Ed "Strangler" Lewis - The first wrestler to truly embrace wrestling as a work. As 1/3 of the Gold Dust Trio (along with promoters Toots Mondt and Billy Sandow), he realized that there was more money to be made in losing the title and promoting a rematch (or cheating the face, as the case may be) than in holding the title exclusively to inflate one's ego. It was during this time that the Gold Dust Trio invented the first wrestling storylines by creating kayfabe feuds between wrestlers. He invented the sleeper hold. 2. Lou Thesz - Simply put, Lou Thesz is the greatest professional wrestler of all time. Thesz invented the powerbomb, the STF, the Thesz Press, the belly-to-back wrist lock suplex and dozens or more maneuvers. Thesz is the youngest world champion in wrestling's history at 21 years old. He was trained by "Strangler" Lewis. Between 1949 and 1956, Thesz traveled the country uniting every "World" championship in the US under the banner of the NWA World Championship. He became the first undisputed World Champion since Jim Londos. He was one of the biggest television stars in the nation during the 1940's and 50's during television's "Golden Age". 3. Rikidozan - Rikidozan brought professional wrestling to Japan and is often referred to as, "the Father of Puroresu". He is one of the greatest heroes in the history of Japan. His match with Lou Thesz for the NWA Championship in 1963 drew and 87.0 television rating while another match with The Destroyer drew a 67.0 television rating. He trained both Antonio Inoki and Giant Baba (the founders of New Japan and All Japan, respectively). 4. Ric Flair - Many call Flair the greatest of all time. He is recognized as a 16 time world champion (although he has actually won 21 world championships, some exchanges are not recognized). Flair has been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame twice. He has been active in the professional wrestling industry for 4 decades. Flair is a member of the NWA Hall of Fame. He main evented the largest wrestling event in history, Collision in Korea, in front of 190,000 fans with Antonio Inoki in Pyongyang, North Korea. Flair is a founding member of the 4 Horseman and is recognized as the first WCW World Champion. Honorable mentions. I almost added Gorgeous George, Hulk Hogan, El Santo, Andre the Giant, Bruno Sammartino, Verne Gagne or George Hackenschmidt to the list, but none of them felt right. Ultimately, I'm very happy with my choices and think the four men that I've named are the four greatest figures in wrestling's history. How do you measure greatness then? because most here probably know only half those men you listed........

It's a pretty damn good list. If you look at modern day sports entertainment only one of those guys is a contender. I think it's a great list, but I don't know if I would have the strangler on there. But then again, I don't know who I would replace him with. He was like the the Bruno Sammartino of his day.

Vince Jr (Washington) Hogan (Jefferson) Austin (Lincoln) Cena (Roosevelt) Maybe in a few years we can replace Cena with whoever is responsible for Wrestlings next boom period Exactly this. Vince Jr and Hogan were responsible for WWF being as big as it is, Austin single handedly saved the WWF from drowning and Cena regardless of whatever anyone says is the greatest pro wrestler of the 21'st century and he SHOULD NOT be replaced in a few years as he has left an eternal mark on the WWE and he should be celebrated as Austin and Vince Jr is celebrated. Ahh, You could have all that but if there is no Bruno Sammartion there is no WWE today. Remember this and learn from it all. You Will NOT have any WWE today if there was no Bruno Sammartino to keep it alive in the 60's after they broke away from the NWA.

This is a OUTSTANDING list and show you actually know your Pro Wrestling History. I would replace Flair with Bruno personally but I salute you for actually understand the History of the sport.

You know there is more to Pro wrestling then the WWE right. Just saying. It goes back over 100 years and WAY before the WWWF even existed ( For those confused that is the WWE Today). Just wanted to let you and others know.

Just wanted to let you and others know. Most are not aware of the history of wrestling before the 50s/60s, mainly due to the fact that there is not a lot of footage or documentation that has been released to the mass public. So you can't blame people for basing their wrestling knowledge on only the past few decades.

I get what you mean but [if I'm not mistaken] Bruno was from the Vince Sr. era. It was Vince Jr that turned WWE into what it is today and used Hulk Hogan as his main superstar (as Vince Sr used Bruno) but only this time he was 100 times more succefsful.

The point of having a "wrestling Mount Rushmore" would be to put the most popular 4 faces of all time on there.
Putting Rikidozan on it would be equal to putting President Martin Van Buren on the real Mount Rushmore.
Sure, historians would recognize him but not most people. The most recognizable faces only should be there.
Hulk Hogan Stone Cold The Rock John Cena
If you wanna replace Cena with someone older like Bruno then thats fine. Let's not turn this into more than it really is, ok?

Is it the annual "Look how much about a historical topic I know aka Wrestling Dick Measuring Contest" time already? Seems just like yesterday.....because it probably occured yesteday as well. My personal suggestion, regardless of merit, would be the Undertaker. Why? Because I'm sure the Undertaker has done more for wrestling than Thomas Jefferson did as President, and he still got on the ing mountain.

Thats tough for only four spots and your reason are valid.
In no particular order.
Hulk Hogan Is a no brainer he is my personal favorite 3,362 approximately combined days as champ With out him and Vince I think there would be no wwe as we know it or pro wrestling for that matter. I don't think it would be dead but more on the small scale like ROH.
Steve Austin Is another given I agree 529 combined days as wwe champ The most selling t-shirts guy lol he is a legend not my fave but I do miss tough enough and he is the reason. Man I do wish Hogan and Austin would have happened win lose or draw!
The Rock 367 combined days as champ the movie star guy. Come on you know you did the people's eyebrow definitely a draw to say the least and yeah box office numbers don't lie.
John Cena 1,191 combined days as champ as of this writting Just like all the names before him he is some one you know by name even if you are not a wrestling fan.
As you can see being champ for a long time does not mean everything it does mean something just not everything. Taker could easily be on this list as every one knows his name too for those of you keeping track he missed 8 wrestlemanias imagine his legacy oh well he might of quit by know we will never know.
Brock it's true he gave Cena his spot when he left know I am not sure how great he will be.
My personal favorites Hulk Hogan name is recognizable the world over. Ric Flair Dominated the South and man entertaining should have been Hogan and Flair at mania VIII! Andre the Giant Talk about Epic this match came a bit late too but who knows it seems perfect to me and I feal if there was no Andre there would be no Hogan! Vince Mcmahon Because he had the vision and yes terrible wrestler what do you expect for promoter and owner!

I'm a little surprised to see so many mountains without a McMahon. Say what you will about "Old School" pre-WWF (or WWWF for that matter), but if it wasn't for a McMahon, we probably wouldn't be talking about wrestling right now.
