As many of you know the new Mattel Entrance stage has hit the shelves of Kmart and I finally got my hands on one. So i wanted to share my thoughts and see what the rest of the community has to say about this piece.
Hands down I have to start off by saying that this is by far one of the best looking entrance stages i have ever seen produced. Here are the stages that I remember off the top of my head being produced in order of awesomeness.
1. Mattel Raw HD stage
2. Jakks Raw 2010 stage (plastic tron, cardboard sides)
3. Jacks Smackdown Silver fist stage
4. Jakks Raw 2005 and 2002 cardboard stage (has best ramp ever produced on both these sets).
5. Jakks Smackdown oval tron stages (electronic and non electronic versions)
6. Jakks Titain Tron Live stage
What I love about this stage boils down to size and accuracy. Now i know that it isn't 100% accurate by any means but it is far closer than many of the stages listed above (but i will address that later).
One thing i love about this set is the immense size. The tallest stage ever produced. And (with the exception of the over head curved tron) is pretty much all solid plastic construction and not easily damaged cardboard like the stages of old. The colors are vibrant and the logos behind clear plastic give it that pixilated HD stage feel.
So now to cut to the chase I would like to go through a list off the things that I like and dislike about this set in no particular order
+ The size. This thing is huge. Ital and looks to fit the action figure world. The entrance is large enough to fit figs and that is what it should do.
- Although the height is great the width is off. The stage is missing the side trons and the large cylinder display leaving the set to look a little thin. This can be easily remedied with print outs but for $50 id' like it to be done right.
+ Removable tron screen images. This is truly awesome. With a quick print out or two you can easily customize your stage to fit any superstar, raw, smackdown, superstars, ppv, or even the defunct ECW! I love that Mattel kept this in mind.
- This stage was expensive and they did not include basic smackdown inserts. This is especially annoying when it comes to the cardboard curved overhead tron. This thing has 2 sides but both say raw. If one was made Smackdown that would have made customization much easier. Speaking of the cardboard over head tron. This is one of the down points of this set. It looks awkward, doesn't hold its curve, and is prone to fall off. Lastly the sides of the main tron are red dooming the set to only look right in the world of raw. I wish they would have had the foresight to give us some color options and make this replaceable much like the other trons.
+ The lights. The synchronized blinking and pulsating star burst style looks so cool.
- The music. For $50 you only get 5 superstar themes. And of these 5 they are heavily edited and cut down to size. Sure you can use your ipod to play whatever themes you want for entrance but you wont get the cool light effects as they only work with the music. If these were able to be used superstate this would have been awesome. Actually if they wanted to make the best stage ever I would say don't even put music in the thing. Make it a stage with lights and speakers with an audio jack. That way i can play any song i want from you tube for all of my figures (yes i have more than 5). This is simple technology that could have been adapted to make the lights pulsate with any song and would have been a much more desirable and versatile device.
+ Bonus features. The stage lights are a simple touch but are nice and not only spin but swivel as well (unlike the stage lights of stages past). The back stage scaffolding is cool as well and a nice added touch for back stage brawling. The breakaway panel on the stage leaves me with mixed feelings. IT is a neat feature and works great but i am afraid that it will break through when i don't want it too. But that is minor and can be easily fixed.
- The ramp. Way to small in both width and length. Also the stage base itself is missing the red coloring that the raw version of the stage has. Last gripe is the WWE logo. The base is near perfect but the WWE logo actually used on raw is slightly different than the scratched out logo we have become used to over the years.
Overall i like this stage and think it is the best we have seen in wrestling figures. The ability to put your own images in it makes it a huge value and with a few printouts can look pretty damn close to perfection. Biggest down side in my point of view are the electronics which seem hardly worthy of the $50 price tag.
Please let me know your thoughts on the stage and about what I have pointed out.
Take care,
