technology has so many meanings... you can't say its good or bad, because it can be both. we have the technology to save lives, but also the technology to wipe out entire cities. then there's technology in entertainment that is amazing. I don't see why anyone would actually want to go back to times that didn't have cell phones and iPods, or both in one... and I think after the first few days, maybe week for some, of not having technology, they'd be crying to check their facebook. and lol @ OP using 2006 as an example.

I feel like technology has made things feel very unnatural. Especially social networking. Like... I don't think certain people should be in touch because they accidentally came across someone's profile on Facebook. People from the past are supposed to stay in the past.
I would delete Facebook, but then I would miss out on pictures of my niece and nephew.
I really hate Facebook.
Google. I think Googling thinkings is very helpful... but what happened to people having a question and going out and seeking knowledge?
Hopefully I am making sense.

The other day I was talking to my wife about how simpler things were. Not easier, but less simpler and calmer, no where near as fast paced as things are today. Don't get me wrong, I love technology, I live and work based on technology and I'm a gadget freak.
There was a time when there were no cell phones, no text messaging, but somehow we survived. There was no internet, no computers but yet again somehow we survived. We actually had to talk to someone face to face or on a corded phone at home. There was no remote control TV unless you count my Dad telling me or my sister to get up and change the TV channel as a remote control. There was no 500 stations, no guide on the TV. We had NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS and some locals over the air. My Dad bought every week the TV Guide where you had to actually read it to find what's on flipping through actual pages. There was no 55" screens, no HD. We were very happy and content with our large 19" (now in color!) blurry & staticy picture. There were no DVDs, no VCRs. The only way to watch a movie at home was to wait for one to come on a Sunday on Movie of the Week on one of the few channels that we had. There were no CDs, no MP3s, no Itunes. If you wanted to listen to music, you bought a record, 8 Track, or cassette or a radio. There were no mega-plex movie theaters, no I-Max. Movie theaters had one or 2 screens, that's it and they were very large screens. That was basically life in the 1970's. There were less fat people, people were way more active and more easy going, friendlier too. It was a less complicated world, slower paced as well. Even the 80's were great, probably even better because computers were just starting to come into the home, VCRs and CDs as well. The '80s seemed like a good mix of tech with still some calmness and simplicity of the' 70s.

Honestly, what has really changed technology wise in 4 years? Smartphones have arrived (although they did exist 4 years ago they weren't wide spread) and you have tablet computers. Really 4 years ago things were simpler technology wise? Are you crazy?

Have you ever watched an old movie.... and say someone is lost or stranded and doesn't know where to go... Im like "why dont they just use their cellphone and call someone" Then Im like wait they didnt have cellphones back then.
Anyone remember the last time they used a payphone? I do. It was like 1996. My girlfriend paged me and I called her from a payphone.
ANyone here remember pagers? I hated those things.

I was thinking about this the other day after a day of just hanging out outdoors, no computers, cars etc. It was beautiful, simple. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realise how much technology has constructed my identity. I mean, I've learnt so much through research online and reading up on things that interest me. About religion, politics, economy, pop culture.. Everything.
Sure, I could do without the facebooks and the iphones etc. But the internet in particular is such a wonderful thing. It has truly made me who I am..

My belief is that technology has in a way caused so many problems such as behaviour within individuals, I mean everyone nowadays seems to have such an attitude, ready for an argument or a fight. Ok I was born in 1992 but you hear things like 'back in the day, no one was this aggressive, everyone knew each other'.
So, I wish there was some sort of way of going back in time and just live that over constantly.

the real thing that is crapty about it is the revamp of social scenario. you go to a bar, you used to have to converse with those there...not wait for your friends to show while you texted them for the last 2 hours from a booth trying not to make eye contact with anyone

I didn't have a cell phone and my high school had two pay phones because they wouldn't let us use the phones in the office. And to Jack, that seems like such a magical time, I would have loved to live through it.
