Well the Gorgeous George above was more of a muppet doll (stuck your hand up his outfit to move his arms and probably his head, like the rocky/hogan punching puppets from the 80's).. As far as wrestling Action figures. The first ones That I'm aware of are the wrestling figures from 1965 that was released in japan. The figures stood around 10 inches tall or so.. They basically looked like scaled down versions of the 80's era hogan and piper large LJN figures. They also resemble large versions of the original Poppy figures which came out later and are classified by alot of people as the 1st wrestling figures. I know of 3 different ones, I think they are Inoki, Baba and a blue masked DR.X, the inoki and baba have titles on them but I'm not sure if they were removeable or sculpted on? I have a pic of them somewhere..

Inoki in green trunks makes me think that they're from the '60s. I think he always wore black in NJPW.

if they're from the 70s, then its really early 70s. they are definitely based on early 60s JWA. the masked blue guy is Killer X. now Killer X is supposedly Frank Townsend under a mask. Townsend died in 1965, and Killer X had no matches past 1964. so akawildfire is probaly right in the release date of these figs being 1965. because why would a company make a fig of a guy who only wrestled for 6 years, wasnt really a top star, and who had been dead for 10 years at a time when no one in Japan had figures made of them?

Sakaguchi is a part of the line, so is Michiaki Yoshimura. i forgot there were more made for this line. there is no way this is an AJW line. its definitely a line for JWA. Killer X only wrestled in JWA. Rikidozan only JWA. Inoki and Baba in the same promotion only happened in JWA. Yoshimura only wrestled in JWA. Sakaguchi started in JWA. there is no way this line is anything but a JWA line. also, who said these were figs based on an anime line? |

My bad, I meant JWA.
Well, Baba and Inoki appeared in the Tiger Mask anime and in the live action series Astekaiser. So I assumed the figs would be for such a toyline.
The figs are probably by Popy (bodystyle is used for other popy-lines)
A JWA toyline isn't documented until now (not in my japanese guide to wrestling figs).

i'm beginning to think these arent as old as we are assuming. i initially thought this to be a different line due to the wear & tear on the figs in the initial pic, but these may be a modern legends line based on JWA. it didnt occur to me that the Sakaguchi & Yoshimura figs were from the same line until you found that pic of the Sakaguchi ruby. i found a packaged pic of the Rikidozan fig from the same line. the writing is tough, but maybe someone knows the company making these based on the package. here it is:  |
