I have heard many stories about how Macho Man Randy Savage wasn't the original choice for the Winner of the Wrestlemania IV Championship tournament. I have been told that Ted Dibiase was originally supposed to win the belt that night and subsequently was supposed to win it one or two more times during his run with WWF. What is the deal with why he never won the big one?

Its been rumored that Ted DiBiase was suppose to walk out of WM4 with the title but either Hogan or Savage (or both) got into McMahon's ear and changed this. A lot of that speculation has to do with the fact that Hogan and Savage both ended up keeping Main Event spots over the year plus the original Tourney Brackets set up a Hogan vs DiBiase final.
The original Tourney bracket looked like this...
Hogan vs Andre (2nd rd)
Roberts vs Rude
Muraco vs Bravo
Steamboat vs Valentine
Savage vs Reed
Bigelow vs OMG
DiBiase vs Duggan
One would assume the 2nd round would be Hogan vs Andre.....Rude vs Muraco.....Steamboat vs Savage and Bigelow vs DiBiase....
3rd round Hogan vs Rude, Savage vs DiBiase and then Hogan vs DiBiase in the final
So assuming that what's been rumored about Hogan and Savage playing politics, they kept their main spots and DiBiase got the consolation prize of the Million Dollar Title.
Ive also heard that the rumors of HTM refusing to drop the IC title to Savage is what got Hogan and Savage in McMahons ear. Thus bringing multiple rumors together.

I'm not sure there is any legitimacy to MDM winning the tournament. It would have made so much more sense to have him keep the title when 'Dre gave it too him. Vince wasn't into letting heels go over on the biggest stage back then.

Im pretty sure its because Honky wouldnt drop the title to Savage(because he wasnt consulted about the match and dint like the way Savage spoke to him during the meeting)
both Dibiase and Honky tell the exact same story on their shoots and bear in mind these 2 hate the sight of one another.I think its legit.

I always wondered why they jobbed out Steamboat in the 1st round. I guess its because they didnt want to have face vs face...but it would have just made sense if they had the epic rematch of Savage/Steamboat

i heard it was because Steamboat still didn't agree to a longterm contract with Vince ( one of the reasons i heard the IC belt was taken off him in the first place) ,so he was jobbed out as punishment for that....really,if you think about it, after the IC title loss to HTM, Steamboat really didn't do much during the rest of his WWF run....really wasn't on TV as much,and wasn't in any memorable feuds during that time either....he wouldn't really "matter" again til he jumped to the NWA in early 1989...so i really think there's something to the story of Vince refusing to push him til he got him under contract...

Vince wasnt happy with Steamboat ever since he asked for time off(his wife just had a kid) when he was IC champ-thats why he dropped it to Honky.
Vince was legit pissed because being IC champ was a big deal then and after that he basically felt he couldnt rely on Steamboat and never pushed him as such.

Hogan was never due to win title at WM4. No Holds Barred was set for filming and WWF needed a champion on the road.
Joker's right about Steamboat and his paternity leave request, so was jobbed out. Think Steamboat v Savage 2 at WM4 would have been epic, but with Steamboat doing the return job. Can imagine Vince though, allowing that, Steamboat wouldn't have lost face by losing to Savage as much as losing to Valentine, even though it would have made Macho's win even more credible if that is possible?

never knew about the paternity leave! thanks for clearing that up...
but,i 100% believe it...back then you were suppossed to give up everything,even families,for the 'Glory of the Road' ....hell,i remember Flair saying when his first child was born,he called up the promoter from the hospital and asked if he could have the night off...the promoter's response was basically "Sure! But next time you get in you car,get on the interstate and keep driving because you won't work here again!"
it's was a brutal,unforgiving business back then...

Steamboat talked about that tournament this week with Dave Meltzer (in the process of talking about Randy Savage's life and death).
Steamboat said when the wrestlers in the tournament were first shown the brackets, they weren't told who was beating who right away. Steamboat said he initially figured it was a no-brainer he was getting the win over Greg Valentine (The Hammer had been relegated to tag teams for two or three years so it seemed like a safe bet that he wouldn't go over in a world title tournament), setting up Steamboat-Savage 2.
He said he was surprised when they told him Valentine was going over... and yes, I think McMahon had reliability concerns about Steamboat after Richie was born and he asked for time off directly after his huge IC title victory.
As for DiBiase -- not sure off hand when he was rumored to win the title aside from WrestleMania 4, but enough different sources have told that story that it appears to be true.
